3 Key Resources to a Successful Start in Whitewater
You may see videos of whitewater kayakers and think, “I could never do that”. What you may not realize is that most of the videos we see are of very difficult rapids and paddlers that have been in the sport for years. This is definitely not where they started. We’ve all been there, looking from the outside with kayaking looking unapproachable. I am here to tell you that getting started is easier than you may think. While whitewater kayaking isn’t for everybody, it is something that almost anyone can do.
I know paddlers ranging from 6 years old to 76 and everywhere in between. There are blind paddlers and with prosthetics that do very well. If you have a will, there is a way! There are three major resources in whitewater kayaking: Instruction, Clubs, and Outfitters
Instruction provides safety as well as a wealth of knowledge. The goal is to build a solid foundation to build on as you learn. Instruction will work to prevent injury and make paddling more efficient and fun. I don’t know a paddler out there who isn’t either thankful for the instruction they got in the beginning or wishes they would’ve gotten it. Instruction is almost like a cheat code when starting to kayak.
Clubs serve as a fantastic resource for new paddlers. They can plug you into other local paddlers and help you learn the ropes as you develop your skills. The Georgia Canoeing Association is a good option in our area and they also advocate for access to the rivers we all love.
Outfitters come in a couple of varieties. An outfitter like Festive Water Paddlesports has all the gear you will need to get started. They serve as experts and can pick the right size and type of equipment you need. Other outfitters like Wildwood Outfitters provide rental gear and shuttle service. Shuttle is another word for transportation to allow you to get to the entry point or retrieve you from the exit point of a river. This makes access logistics easier and allows you to bring a friend who may not have equipment.
Whitewater kayaking can be difficult to get started but if you utilize the resources above you will avoid wasting time, money, and effort. Best of all you will have the knowledge and equipment to keep you safe. Frustration or a bad experience at the start is the number one reason people quit.
If you are considering whitewater kayaking as a hobby, I challenge you to make the leap and enjoy the adventure, nature, and the amazing friendships you will make along the way!
